The Digital Engagement Group is a new agency with a distinguished pedigree.

In 1994 Bob Heyman and Leland Harden co founded the seminal internet marketing agency Cybernautics where they are credited with being emarketing pioneers who coined the term SEO (Search Engine Optimization  (the above should hot link to Bob’s search engine land article on this) and are the first to apply the concepts of Audience Development to the internet.  As trailblazers in emarketing, Cybernautics was at the  forefront of development of Search Engine marketing, Social Media Marketing (then called Word of Web) and the use of contests and promotions on the web.  Clients included Intel, SGI, Avon, Bristol Myers, Sony, REI, and Harley Davidson. Cybernautics was acquired by USWeb immediately before its successful IPO in 1997.

Bob and Leland’s first best-selling book (Net Results) appeared in 1998 and became a de facto standard at companies and business schools.

Bob founded eMarketing Partners in 1999, concentrating on relationship marketing and audience development.  Clients included IBM, NEC and ABC/Disney.  The company was acquired by the Catenas Corporation  and merged into its operating affiliates including McKenna Group and Prophet Brand Strategies.

 Following the sale of eMarketing Partners, Bob was Chief Search Officer at Mediasmith, where he oversaw the integration of Paid Search with overall Paid Media planning. 

 

Bob and Leland’s fourth book, Digital Engagement was published this past February by AMACOM, the publishing arm of the American Management Association.  Their new book about marketing ROI will be published by AMACOM early next year.

    In a previous life, Bob is credited with having coined the term "edutainment" while producing films for the National Geographic Society.  He earned a Masters degree from Harvard University in Multi Media Curriculum Design.  And in another n a previous life, Bob was an entertainment and IP attorney whose clients included Jefferson Starship and Ray Manzarek of the Doors. His rock opera "Rock Justice" is included in the list of top ten rock operas in the Book of Rock Lists.
